Bad Ass Indeed

Nice thumping beats and an almost prodigy esque little stab riff makes this a nice dirty tune. Really cool stuff man, like it alot.
Big bad ass 5 for you:)

AdmiralConquistador responds:

Oi, it's the fuckin King!

It is a nice dirty tune, as ironic and paradoxical as it sounds. Thanks man, I just realized that you pretty much watched me grow musically on this website, from birth to where I am now haha. I wonder... how much better am I now? :)

Chaotic.

Nice fat drums and good breaks and chopping. The squelchy bassline is a good contrasting sound, i'm not too keen on the riff itself though. The swirling slightly distorted pads are a nice touch and are the calm amidst the storm. This seems more like an exercise in mangling of sounds rather than a piece of music, but there's nothing wrong with that. This trk is really LOUD, i had to turn my volume below half to listen to it bearably through my headphones, loud may be good, but this might just be a little too much volume-wise. An interesting piece, but I couldn't really get into it. Good stuff nonetheless.

dj-padman1 responds:

Thanks for the review KB. Much appreciated! As usual, you've made some excellent, useful observations. ;)
The bassline, yeah...I can see what you mean. It's pretty random. I was just having a bit of jam so it's not as cohesive as it could be.
I'm guessing the loudness issue is to do with the extreme saturation I applied to the drums, maybe I should be a little more selective where I apply it, thanks for raising the point.
Might be a bit long too, you know how it is when you're jamming, its easy to get carried away, but in the aftermath you realise that objectively, the song shouldn't be that long!
Thanks again :)
I've got a long way to go till I can challenge Autechre...:P

Beats, Breaks and Incidentals

Nice squarepusher esq jazz randomness intro. I definately don't call this ambient, more breaky acid electronica, but there's no category for that on this shitty site:)
Good use of filters and nice broken up vocal snippets help keep up the hectic feel of this trk.
The main beats/breaks really draw the trk together and give it focus while the incidentals do their thing. The trk progresses really well and builds into a nice head nodding tune whilst still maintaing its loose feel. I think the intro will be this tracks downfall on this site as the little kids wont listen past it to get to the main body/focus of the trk which is always a shame, but who gives a shit eh, this is another quality tune that is both interesting and accessible.
ps: I did slap a 5 on that other trk eventually:)
This gets my 5 too.
Good stuff man, shame about the fade out though.

dj-padman1 responds:

Lol, are you dissin' NG!
They have bluegrass, but no breaks! Maybe it's time to buy a Jew's harp.
Thanks for the in-depth review, and my heart skipped a beat when you mentioned Squarepusher...aww..shucks..
You're on the money as usual with your observations, the intro WILL kill me. Probably objectively they are a bit too manic for any audience though.
Glad your dug the vocals, perhaps I should be looking to do more with them though. I wish I had your skill in handling them...
Well, all the best man, and thanks!

Drum and no bass

Nice. I think the sounds you've used are good and definately fit well within the whole DnB ethic, but they seem to sound a little seperate. I think there needs to be some real bass added to this trk as it's a little treble heavy. The additon of a dirty sub-bass riff to complement the bassline would really help. In my opinion all the right ideas and sounds are there, but it needs to be brought together production-wise to sound complete.

GangsterRapper responds:

Thanks for the review. To start with it was an Electro break tune (Nu-Skool/U.K Breakbeat) But as there was no Genre for it I just sped it up. I can show you the original of it. Much deeper and you feel the alot less treble. I took the orignal sub out of it because sped up, it sounded shit.

Once again thx 4 the review.

GR.

Nice

Nice riffs in this trk, very cathcy. A kinda Radiohead/sterephonics vibe, sorry bout the stereophonics comment, cos i hate them, apart from the first album ,but the dist on the git reminds me of it. I think the drums are the weak link in this trk, they don't help the trk, they sound a bit seperate from the rest of the mix. The kick is fine, it's the snare drum and the hi-hats, they sound too electro, in my opinion what it needs is a nice reverbed rock snare and hats. Again I think what would really make this into a great trk would be the addition of some vox.
Cool stuff though, I really enjoy the reversed riffs and guitar drone in this trk.

pitbulljones responds:

thanks once again for a good review KB. the riff is so simple it hurts on this track, just play the d strung on the 12th, 10th, 3rd, 2nd and open, whilst picking in a quadruplet d,g,b,g all the way through. easy as pie. i can handle the comparision to stereophonics as long as its the first album im beng compared with. otherwise you can eat shit and die lol.

the drums are pretty bad aint they? i'm using fruityloops at the mo n i'm still getting used to the programme, at least the kick fits.

there are vocals for this track, but me old singers got em, im gonna have to email him, and get em, or i may just write me own. anyways thnaks once again, much appreiciated.

COol

An interesting trk man, good to hear some new stuff from you. 5/5 from me, and i'll probably be dropping you a line for the high qual version. Btw
you have a myspace account?

crud responds:

yeah man! so good tah hear some stats from a man who knows his stuff. thanks for the review and i HIGHLY reccomend the hi-fi version, it's hard for me to listen to the low rate version too.

Myspace?.....yah got me. i go by "Crud @ Office" on MySpace

cheq yah later!

Spatial

Really liked the intro to this trk. I like the fact it's a slow builder. Personally i don't like the percussive bells sound, but I do love the ambient reverb you have on the attacked synths. It has a great spatial quality. I would love to hear this with a simple downtempo beat. A quality piece of ambinece that grows with each listen. My only problem is that it kinda sounds a bit muddy because of the release on some of the reverb, mainly on the synth that's introduced towards the end. It's middle eq is quite high and causes it to interupt the other parts. Persnally I love the fisrt minute of this tune, and would be happy to listen to that on a loop for ages:D

Gillenium responds:

Thanks! But yeah, I've had to say it many times, but I'll say it again... I just don't see the appeal of this song. I liked it when I released it, but now I just think it sounds dated. I have no idea why this song has become so popular. I keep wanting to redo it, cause the melody is good, but I can never figure out what to do with it...

nice.

It has a nice sound to it. The filters at the start work well, the lead synth might be a bit too high in the mix though. The panning is good and the fx used help to keep the tune interesting. Perhaps a more wandering bassline would work well if you decided to add a bridge section to this trk. I think it's well produced and the arrangement is simple but effective, though personally I would like to hear some more variance throughout.
Good stuff.

coldbloodedmessiah responds:

I was actually thinking the same thing. I'm trying to incorporate that in my newer tracks, which should be uploaded sometime soon.

chilled

A nice sound/vibe to this little piece of ambience. I would almost have preferred it without the beats, although they do help it to tick along nicely. I would be interested to hear what this would sound like if the beats were removed then you reversed the piece and played it back an octave lower.
Definately conveys a melancholy mood.

mhb responds:

thanx

Chilled

Has a nice dissonance to this trk. The mixture of electronics with more 'real' sounding instruments works well. This sounds ideal for rpg gaming, I hear it as walking music, perhaps walking through an eerie area in a game that has a haunted forest:) I don't really know what you could add to this. Perhaps a bridge section that becomes more full-on with some distortion and high pitched stabs on an instrument to heighten the tension, who knows....
Nice stuff.

WinTang responds:

Cheers for reviewing, man, whenever I come across a review of yours, you always hit the nail straight on the head, and are very helpful at that!
I agree that it's much RPG-y, Chrono Trigger was a little on my mind when I was making it.
Your suggestion for a bridge section sounds very compelling, I'll give that a try!
