90's

that's an old school dance bassline you made there, very 1990's:) I have to be honest and say, that although the bassline helps me regress to times spent loitering around ice-rinks and cinema complexes I find it a little too old-fashioned, the whole trk seems like a homage to tunes from the 90's dance era which is a time i'd rather forget/;ignore musically. it's well put together, well arranged and produced, but not my bag:)

She fed you a whole Car!!!:)

liked this right from the get go. Great glitch. Nice use of ambient pads/sounds to give a contrast in sound. The little vocal snippets are a good touch, I always like to hear little bits like that. The trk even loops smoothly on here so you can keep on listening for as long as u want:) My only beef with the trk is that the pad that comes in towards the middle of the trk just fades a little crudely. It might have been nicer to extend the length of the pad and then ended it with tailing off release/decay and not fading? who knows, it's a small complaint:)
Really liked this, big fat 5 for you.

LJCoffee responds:

You know I respect you and love your work so the high scores mean a lot coming from you!

Smile.

Lush start to the proceedings, nice to hear some guitars mixed with electronic on this site for a change. Good solid beat drops, almost industrial in feel. The track builds quickly and well, but does seem to get a little overloaded with sound. I would have liked to hear it take more time and be a bit more subtle in the addition of parts. It certainly is quite hectic, with some lovely touches and interesting production. I think you could really drag the start out and slow build the sounds, dropping in one or two every 8 bars or so. It almost sounds like it peaks too soon.
Again, a really interesting piece that is unlike anything i've heard on this site before, really good stuff.

JamesMillen responds:

Thank you.

I get really impatient when writing on a computer, I find it hard to draw things out. Plus I'm paranoid about getting dragged into the all to easy repetitiveness that so many computer music makers fall foul of.

Unsettling.

Definately not the start I was expecting from an ambient piece, but it settles nicely. Generally this doesn't feel lika an ambient track to me, more one for the Misc section:)
As you wrote in your description it definately has a disconcerted feel to it, never really settling. I would have to say that the sudden drum break and then cymbal crashes sound a little out of place. Perhaps try replacing the cymbal with a more electronic sound instead of an acoustic one. There's some good depth to the sound and the ending noise is fitting.
After the tracks finished i'm kinda left thinking 'what just happened!?'.
Not really a track so much as a collection of sounds, but an interesting collection nonetheless.

JamesMillen responds:

Thank you for your comments, I was looking forward to someone reviewing this!

The cymbal I agree with, was never happy with that. The drum break was one hundred percent deliberate and stays, because for me it's the focus of the track. But most people agree with you!

toytown becomes moody and serious

like the chopped/glitchy beats, nice:) Not much in the way of melody, but just enough to keep it fresh. I can't vote 10 on this though as it's just a little loop, so 8/10 & 4/5 from me:) why you no review my music anymore, did i hurt you in some way:D hahaha

LJCoffee responds:

Hey hey hi hi!

I agree - in fact 8/10 and 4/5 might be a bit generous.

Sorry I haven't been around to vote on your stuff in a bit - there's nothing but respect and admiration for you from my end. I'll have to go see what's new.

Thanks KB!

Abstract

Good use of synth stabs and backing glitch/fx to make an interesting soundscape. It's definately an interesting piece, but it lacks any real direction. I think it could be made into something a bit more defined. I would like to hear it grow from the mixed up style into something that resembles a beat and then build with the addition of layers of synths and sounds to take it to a nice crescendo. I can imagine adding a 4/4 beat/sound towards the end of the piece would enable you to take this trk wherever you wanted, but in a more musical sense. To me it sounds like someone messing around, but with a good knowledge of sounds and fx, but that's not enough to make it a good piece of music.

Gentle

A gentle and sparse, but mood evoking piece with a good change in atmosphere thanks to the happy style melody that appears later in the trk. I always been a fan of using attacked sounds to get across a sad or longing feeling/mood and you've used that technique well in this track to create quite a blue atmosphere.
I think the trk is a little long and might need some more variance to keep the listeners interest up, it could also do with some cleaner production as the I think in a track of this nature with few sounds, you really need to make them work both individually and in unison. Maybe some use of subtle panning in the mix would help seperate them. Also, there's one synth sound that plays a single note that doesn't work for my ears, it's a little too dominant and sounds a little off-key, perhaps because of the effect that's on it?
Overall I really liked the piece, simple but effective is one of the hardest things to pull off musically in my opinion and you have done it well. This was the first thing I listened to after getting up this morning and it was a very pleasant way to start the day:)
Take it easy.

Relaxing

This is a nice trk. Really chilled but slightly sinister feel. Good glitchy beats, but personally i don't like the brush-kit style drum loop that comes in about halfway through the trk, i just don't think it's necessary.
Cool trk, good panning and simple but effective ambience. Nice use of bleeps and blips to break up the mood. Liked it alot.

StrangeEncounters responds:

Thanks alot for the review! I was gonna lay some glitchwork on the drums. But never got to it. Thanks though,

DialP

Nice trk, I can definately hear a Plaid influence with the long intro followed with the breaks. The trk has a good build to it, i'm not too sure about the mid range synth that comes in at the bridge, i like what it plays, but the sound doesn't seem right to me. I think this trk is crying out for a deep flowing/holding bassline to help drive it along, as at the moment it is a little overpowered by the high-end beats and a sub-bass drone line would really balance the mix out nicely.
Nice production and good choice of sounds for the ambience, nice and spacious.
Good stuff.

snoballandthmonyshot responds:

yo the king,
this is another blassic case of 'hmm, nice build-up, shame about the rest' due to lack of patience. you've given me a bit to think about, will make the effort to re-do it as i like that 'plaid' like intro.
nice1 ;ped

p.s. omg, plaid have got a new album out, listened to a few snippets on bleep.com last, sounds like it's just a bunch of extras from spokes, but hey, if it ain't broke...

Rain

Ah Rain, one thing I know lots about living in the UK:) This trk is quite descriptive, with the synths reflecting the sound of droplets splashing off the window pane. Your choice of sounds in this trk are very fitting, especially the thunder esq sound that comes in as the trk builds. Definately my favourite of your recent submissions. Good simple interlacing riffs and effective drum programming make for a very good descriptive piece.
Nice.

LJCoffee responds:

Thanks you again, this one and Slumber are my favorites of the four that I submitted. I'm glad you liked it.

I haven't been over to listen to your newer stuff - I'll need to do that over the weekend!

talk to you later
